UPLAND, Ind. -- Taylor (Ind.) University earned a doubleheader sweep over the Indiana Wesleyan University baseball team on Friday afternoon in Upland, Indiana.
In a pair of highly competitive games, Taylor (18-3, 4-0 MCC) won the set by scores of 9-6 and 6-3.
In the opener, Indiana Wesleyan plated four runs in the top of the third inning to take a 5-1 lead. But Taylor closed the gap with single runs in the third, fourth and fifth innings for a 5-4 IWU lead. Taylor would chase Indiana Wesleyan starting pitcher Sam Lewis in the sixth inning as TU scored five runs in the inning to capture the victory.
Shortstop Ben Zachary finished the game 2-for-4 with a RBI and two runs scored while centerfielder CJ Sandmann was 2-for-4 with two runs. Catcher Alex Ridlen hit 2-for-3 with a double and one RBI.
In the second game, the Trojans led 4-1 after four innings. The Wildcats would pull to within one run at 4-3 with a two-run fifth inning. But the Trojans quickly answered with a pair of runs in the bottom of the fifth for the 6-3 win.
Starting pitcher Jordan Vannoy allowed six runs - three earned - in five innings of work. He surrendered six hits and struck out four.
Second baseman Derek Freds reached base three times with a 2-for-2 game and a walk. First baseman Kyle Beachy was 2-for-3 with a RBI.
Indiana Wesleyan (8-16, 0-2 MCC) will next play on Saturday against Concordia (Mich.) University. First pitch is scheduled for 1 p.m. at Prasco Park in Mason, Ohio.
