MARION, Ind. -- Aquinas (Mich.) College traveled to Indiana Wesleyan University on Saturday afternoon for a baseball doubleheader and won a pair of pitching duels by scores of 1-0 and 3-1.
Freshman starting pitcher Sam Lewis was excellent on the mound for the Wildcats in game one. He allowed one run on four hits while he walked one and struck out five. He surrendered the only run of the game in the sixth inning.
Indiana Wesleyan had a chance to tie the score in the bottom of the seventh as IWU put runners on first and third base with two outs. But a pickoff ended the game with the tying run on third.
Senior shortstop Ben Zachary reached base three times in the contest, with a 2-for-2 performance and a walk. He also had two stolen bases.
In the nightcap, Aquinas scored two runs in the third inning and added an insurance run in the fourth. Indiana Wesleyan would threaten in the fifth inning. IWU scored a run but had the potential tying run thrown out at third base for out number three while the runner ahead of him had not yet touched home plate for the score.
The Wildcats did not threaten in the final two innings of play to drop the doubleheader.
Freshman designated hitter Peter Engle capped the day going 2-for-2 with a double and a stolen base. Sophomore pinch hitter Brice Davis singled home junior first baseman Kyle Beachy for the lone Wildcat run.
Sophomore starting pitcher Tim Zeigler was credited with the loss as he allowed two runs on five hits in 2-2/3 innings. Junior Ryne Brown was terrific out of the pen as he gave up one run on one hit in 4-1/3 innings pitched.
Indiana Wesleyan is now 7-13 this season while Aquinas improves to 5-4.
The Wildcats return to the diamond at 1 p.m. on Tuesday, March 23 as Indiana Wesleyan hosts Concordia (Mich.) University.
