Box Score MARION, Ind. -- No. 24-ranked Indiana Wesleyan University men's basketball stymied Berea (Ky.) College all night long in advancing to the Caleb Dimmich Memorial Tournament championship game with an 89-66 victory Friday in Luckey Arena.
Berea (1-1) was limited to 33.9-percent (21 of 62) shooting on the night including 20.8-percent (5 of 24) from 3-point range. Senior guard Darrin Dorsey, a NAIA First Team All-American selection last year, was held to just 13 points on 5-of-17 shooting, with most of his points coming in the final 10 minutes of the game.
Patrick Hopkins dominated all night long for Indiana Wesleyan with his second straight double-double. The sophomore forward scored a career-high 27 points along with 12 rebounds. Hopkins was 10-of-11 shooting and 7-of-8 from the foul line.
Indiana Wesleyan (2-0) did not trail all game and led comfortably most the night.
Berea tied the game 9-9 with a free throw with 13:37 left in the half but Indiana Wesleyan ran off nine straight points for an 18-9 lead. Seven of those points went to Hopkins in a 49 second span.
At the midway point of the half, Berea trimmed the deficit to 18-13, but once again Indiana Wesleyan extended the lead with seven straight points, all by sophomore guard Aaron Martin. He ended the contest with 12 points and five rebounds while connecting on 3-of-5 shots from deep.
The Wildcats looked to put the game away at the end of the half and led 38-24 with just over one minute before halftime. But the Mountaineers tallied five points to close the gap to nine at 38-29 at intermission.
IWU sophomore guard George Jones IV hit a bomb to open the scoring in the second half for a 12 point lead (41-29), and the Wildcats would hold a double digit lead the rest of the game.
Jones' basket ignited a 10-2 run to open the second half for a 48-31 advantage. By the midway point of the half, Indiana Wesleyan had built a 24-point lead at 65-41.
Wildcat junior guard Derrick Troyer hit a free throw with 6:58 left to play and gave Indiana Wesleyan a 72-46 lead, the largest of the night. Troyer shot 7-of-10 from the floor and finished with 18 points and four assists.
Indiana Wesleyan shot a blistering 54.8-percent (34 of 62) on the night thanks in part to a huge advantage in the paint. IWU outscored Berea 52-30 down low.
In the opening contest of the tournament, Ashford (Iowa) University held off East-West (Ill.) University by a 75-73 score to advance to the championship game tomorrow at 3 p.m. against Indiana Wesleyan. East-West will battle Berea at 1 p.m. in the consolation game.
