Box Score SPRING ARBOR, Mich. -- No. 25-ranked Spring Arbor (Mich.) University was the third consecutive nationally ranked program to fall to the Indiana Wesleyan University men's basketball on Thursday night as the Wildcats pulled out a 72-63 road victory.
The win is the ninth straight for Indiana Wesleyan overall and IWU has knocked off four ranked opponents during the streak. The last three wins versus ranked opponents have come on the road or at a neutral site.
Indiana Wesleyan earns the critical road Mid-Central College Conference win despite poor shooting from outside the arc. IWU entered the night ranked fourth nationally in 3-point field goal percentage at a clip of 41.2-percent, but shot just 18.8-percent (3 of 16) in a difficult gym for SAU opponents to shoot.
But junior forward Will Hubertz connected on a pair of 3-pointers late in the contest at crucial moments for Indiana Wesleyan. Spring Arbor had cut the Indiana Wesleyan down to five points when Hubertz sank his first long shot of the night with 5:13 to go to push the IWU lead to eight points (59-51). Less than a minute later, Spring Arbor had scored five straight points to cut the deficit to three points, when Hubertz hit another from beyond the arc to give IWU a six point lead (62-56) with 4:11 remaining.
Senior center Zach Coverstone, the reigning NAIA DII National Player of the Week, remained hot with his fourth double-double in the last five games. Coverstone scored a game-high 26 points and tied for top honors with 11 rebounds. He shot 9-of-12 from the floor and blocked two shots.
Senior guard Spencer Harris was the only other Wildcat in double figures with 13 points on 5-of-7 shooting. Senior forward Josh Williams contributed nine points on 4-of-5 shooting while Hubertz finished with eight points and four rebounds.
Indiana Wesleyan shot a sizzling 57.7-percent (15 of 26) during the first half and ended the night at 48.1-percent (25 of 52). Spring Arbor shot 42.4-percent (25 of 59) and just 14.3-percent (2 of 14) from 3-point range.
The Wildcats will look to win their fourth straight game against a ranked opponent when Indiana Wesleyan hosts conference rival and No. 20-ranked University of Saint Francis (Ind.) at 3 p.m. on Saturday, January 9 in Luckey Arena. IWU will also look to win their 10th consecutive game, a feat that has not been accomplished since the Wildcats opened the 2006-07 season at 10-0.
