Box Score GOSHEN, Ind. -- No. 9-ranked Indiana Wesleyan University men's basketball overcame a 13 point second half deficit to stretch their program record win streak to 14 with a 71-66 victory at Goshen (Ind.) College on Saturday afternoon.
The game featured nine ties and 18 lead changes as the Maple Leafs lost for the first time at home this season.
Goshen (13-9, 4-5 MCC) held a 36-31 lead at the break and would score the first eight points of the second half to extend their advantage to 44-31. The 13 point lead was the largest of the game for either team.
But the Wildcats roared back with 12 unanswered points to close to within 44-43 with 13:38 remaining. IWU finally took the lead following a drive to the basket by senior guard Spencer Harris with 9:47 on the clock and a 49-48 lead.
The next five minutes were highlighted by two ties and six lead changes. Neither team led by more than three points during the stretch.
Goshen forward Daniel Butler scored two of his team-high 21 points with 2:54 remaining to give the Maple Leafs a 61-60 lead. Butler scored 16 second half points.
On the next Indiana Wesleyan possession, senior center Zach Coverstone was fouled under the basket. He sank both free throws for a 62-61 Wildcat lead. It turned out to be the final lead change on the afternoon.
With 1:35 on the clock, Harris drained a 3-point bucket to increase the IWU lead to five points at 67-62.
Butler hit two free throws on the next Maple Leaf possession to cut the lead to three points. Following an IWU turnover, GC guard Errick McCollum hit a field goal with 31 seconds and the Indiana Wesleyan lead was down to 67-66.
IWU sophomore guard Derrick Troyer stepped up and drilled two free throws to extend the lead to 69-66 with 27 seconds remaining. Goshen went to the hot hand in Butler for the game-tying 3-point try, but he missed short and the rebound went to Troyer.
Troyer iced the game with two more free throws and for the final score of 71-66.
Coverstone led all players with 23 points with an 8-of-13 performance from the field and 7-of-8 from the foul line. Harris scored 14, Hubertz added 13 while Troyer finished with 11.
After a dismal shooting performance in the first half, Indiana Wesleyan shot 52.4-percent (11 of 21) in the second half en route to 40.4-percent (21 of 52) for the game. Indiana Wesleyan was able to get to the foul line consistently all game long and took 31 shots there compared to 18 for Goshen. IWU finished at 80.6-percent (25 of 31) from the charity stripe.
Indiana Wesleyan avenges their lone conference loss of the season which happened to be the last loss for IWU before the record win streak. IWU is now the only MCC team to defeat every other program this season.
McCollum entered the afternoon for Goshen averaging over 24 points a game which leads the Mid-Central College Conference. He ended with 17 points on 5-of-14 shooting and committed eight turnovers.
Indiana Wesleyan (19-3, 8-1 MCC) will remain on the road and will battle No. 4-ranked Bethel (Ind.) College at 7 p.m. on Tuesday, January 26 in Mishawaka, Indiana.
