MARION, Ind. (Box 1, Box 2) -- Spring Arbor (Mich.) University won both ends of a baseball doubleheader with Indiana Wesleyan University on Thursday afternoon at Wildcat Field.
Spring Arbor pulled out a 2-1 victory in the opener and rallied late in game two for a 7-4 win.
In the first game, Spring Arbor second baseman Ryan Marken clubbed a two-run home run in the second inning for the early 2-0 lead. Indiana Wesleyan cut the lead in half in the fifth inning when centerfielder Kory Hollensteiner singled home first baseman Kyle Beachy.
But Spring Arbor (18-8, 11-3 MCC) closed the game out with excellent pitching from Andy Paulun and Jeff Tervo. SAU limited the Wildcats to two hits in the contest.
IWU starting pitcher Josh Worrell went the distance for the Wildcats. He gave up five hits and struck out four batters.
In game two, Indiana Wesleyan held a 3-0 lead after three innings. Spring Arbor quickly answered with three runs in the fourth inning as the game remained tied until the bottom of the sixth inning. Freds led off the inning with a double and one out later, third baseman Jonathan Bastian singled home pinch runner Tim Zeigler to give IWU the 4-3 advantage.
Indiana Wesleyan (13-25, 4-8 MCC) could not complete the win in the seventh as Spring Arbor scored four runs on three hits and two errors. IWU had one hit in the bottom half of the inning but left the tying run on deck.
Bastian finished the game 2-for-3 with one RBI while catcher Alex Ridlen was 1-for-3 at the plate with two RBI.
Jordan Vannoy was the pitcher on record for Indiana Wesleyan. He allowed seven runs - five earned - in 6-1/3 innings pitched.
Indiana Wesleyan and Spring Arbor will meet again on Saturday, April 11 in Spring Arbor. First pitch is scheduled for 1 p.m.
