MARION, Ind. (Box 1, Box 2) -- Indiana Wesleyan University swept visiting Goshen (Ind.) College by identical 9-1 wins on Thursday night in Mid-Central College Conference baseball action at Wildcat Field.
In the opener, Indiana Wesleyan did most their damage during the first two innings. IWU broke the game open with three runs in the first and four more in the second for a 7-0 lead. Goshen (10-42, 1-21 MCC) scored their lone run in the sixth and Indiana Wesleyan finished the scoring with two run sin the bottom of the sixth for the 9-1 victory.
Josh Worrell pitched six innings of one hit baseball for the Wildcats. Worrell walked five and struck out 10 Maple Leafs. Senior Jake Scholfield pitched the final inning in relief and added two additional strikeouts.
The Wildcat bats totaled nine hits in the game from seven different players.
Leading Indiana Wesleyan was catcher Alex Ridlen. He finished 2-for-4 with four RBIs. Leftfielder TJ Fletcher went 2-for-3 with three runs scored, a RBI and one stolen base. Centerfield Kory Hollensteiner added a double, a stolen base, two RBI and two runs scored.
In the nightcap, Indiana Wesleyan (16-32, 7-15 MCC) once again led 7-0 after two innings as the Wildcats crossed the plate seven times in the second inning. Two more runs in the fourth inning increased the lead to 9-0 before Goshen scored their only run in the fifth inning for the 9-1 Indiana Wesleyan victory.
Jordan Vannoy was the winning pitcher for Indiana Wesleyan. He went the distance and allowed one run on nine hits. He walked one and struck out seven.
Hollensteiner and Ridlen paced Indiana Wesleyan with 2-for-3 performances as each collected two doubles. Hollensteiner scored one run and had three RBI while Ridlen scored one and knocked one in.
Indiana Wesleyan completes the regular season on Saturday with a road doubleheader at Huntington (Ind.) University.
