UPLAND, Ind. -- Taylor (Ind.) University completed a four-game season sweep of the Indiana Wesleyan University baseball team on Saturday afternoon by winning both ends of a doubleheader in Upland, Indiana.
The Trojans won the opener 7-5 and completed the sweep with an 11-1 victory.
In the opening game, Taylor scored in each of the first three innings, including a four run fourth, to open up a 6-1 advantage. Indiana Wesleyan added one in the fourth and three in the fifth to cut the deficit to 6-5.
Taylor (27-13, 13-5 MCC) scored an insurance run in the sixth to push their lead to 7-5. Indiana Wesleyan put one on base in the seventh but could do no more.
Indiana Wesleyan (14-32, 5-15 MCC) out-hit Taylor for the third straight game but once again could not push enough runs across the plate. IWU had 12 hits to Taylor's nine.
IWU catcher Alex Ridlen totaled three hits and scored once. Shortstop Brice Davis was 2-for-4 with a triple and three RBI.
Jonathan Bastian was the pitcher of record for Indiana Wesleyan. He allowed seven runs on nine hits as he pitched all six innings.
The second game lasted just five innings as Taylor won 11-1. Taylor's big inning was the second as they scored six. The next inning Taylor plated three more runs to lead 9-1 after three innings of play. TU ended the day with a pair of runs in the fifth.
Designated hitter Kory Hollensteiner was 1-for-3 and knocked in right fielder Derek Freds for the lone Indiana Wesleyan run.
Jordan Vannoy was given the loss on the mound for the Wildcats. Vannoy gave up nine runs -- three earned -- in three innings of work. Taylor was able to capitalize on six unearned runs via four Indiana Wesleyan errors.
Indiana Wesleyan will return to the diamond at 5 p.m. on Wednesday, April 22 as the Wildcats host Defiance (Ohio) College in a single nine inning game at Wildcat Field.
