Baseball Wins Spring Break Pool with Pair of Wins on Saturday

CLEARWATER, Fla. -- Indiana Wesleyan University baseball won their final five games of the Clearwater College Invitational to win their pool during the Spring Break trip in Clearwater, Florida.

The Wildcats completed the weeklong trip with wins over Notre Dame (Ohio) College and Morningside (Iowa) College on Saturday.

Indiana Wesleyan cruised to an 8-1 win over Notre Dame in the opening contest. Josh Worrell threw six strong innings of one hit baseball while allowing just one unearned run. He struck out seven to earn the win.

The Wildcats scored the first eight runs in the game, with four in the third and three in the sixth, before the shutout was lost in the seventh.

Kyle Beachy was 3-for-4 at the plate with a RBI, run scored and a steal. Derek Freds had a 2-for-4 performance with a double and two RBIs.

In their final Florida game, IWU defeated Morningside for the third time this week by a 6-5 margin.

The Wildcats gave up two runs in the first before scoring a single run in the second and five more in the fourth to take the lead for good. Morningside plated one run in the sixth and two in the seventh but could not tie the score as the Wildcats earned their fifth straight victory.

Indiana Wesleyan received excellent work out of the bullpen from Jordan Vannoy and Dan Bruckner. Vannoy earned the win in five innings of relief while Vannoy pitched the seventh for the save.

Freds and Brice Davis each led the offensive attack with two hits apiece.

The Wildcats improve their record to 7-11 on the season and are set to host their home opener at 1 p.m. on Saturday, March 14 against Siena Height (Mich.) University.
