MARION, Ind. (Box 1, Box 2) -- Indiana Wesleyan University and University of Saint Francis (Ind.) split a Mid-Central College Conference baseball doubleheader on Saturday afternoon at Wildcat Field.
The Wildcats shutdown the Cougars 5-0 in the opener but lost a 3-1 decision in the final game.
IWU starting pitcher Josh Worrell threw hit second consecutive shutout this week in the first game. He scattered five hits over seven innings, striking out five Cougars. For the week, Worrell allowed no runs over 14 innings with 15 strikeouts.
Indiana Wesleyan (13-20, 3-3 MCC) used a big four-run third inning to distance them self for Saint Francis. IWU added another run in the fourth.
Right fielder Derek Freds went 2-for-3 at the dish with one run and three RBIs. Catcher Alex Ridlen reached base three times with two hits and a walk while driving in one.
Indiana Wesleyan out-hit Saint Francis 7-4 in the ballgame.
A three run sixth inning proved to be the difference in the second game as Saint Francis (12-14, 3-3 MCC) rallied for a 3-1 victory. Indiana Wesleyan scored in the bottom of the fifth to take a 1-0 lead but could not hang on as USF quickly responded in the next inning.
Center fielder Kory Hollensteiner reached base four times with one hit and three walks. He chased home left fielder TJ Fletcher for the lone Wildcat run.
Jordan Vannoy was the pitcher on record for Indiana Wesleyan, allowing three runs in five plus innings of work. Dan Bruckner and Jake Scholfield each allowed one hit in one inning of relief.
Indiana Wesleyan will host No. 11 Madonna (Mich.) University their next time out. Game time is scheduled for 4 p.m. on Tuesday, March 31 at Wildcat Field.
