MARION, Ind. (Box 1, Box 2) -- Indiana Wesleyan University did not allow a run in a doubleheader sweep of Marian (Ind.) College in the Mid-Central College Conference opener for both teams on Tuesday night at Wildcat Field.
Josh Worrell and Jordan Vannoy combined for two complete game shutouts for Indiana Wesleyan on the mound as the Wildcats won 2-0 and 5-0.
Worrell took a no-hit bid into the seventh and final inning in the first game before a bloop single broke it up with one out. That was the only hit for the Knights in the contest as Worrell struck out 10 and walked four in the win.
Indiana Wesleyan was also matched against a good pitching performance as IWU was also limited to a single hit. But Indiana Wesleyan took advantage of five walks and four Marian errors to score single runs in the fourth and fifth innings to account for all the scoring.
Left fielder TJ Fletcher earned the lone IWU hit in the fifth inning which scored courtesy runner Tim Ziegler from second base. Shortstop Brice Davis ended the game 0-for-1 at the dish but walked twice and scored the game-winning run in the fourth inning.
Vannoy was able to match his teammate on the mound in the nightcap. He scattered nine hits in seven innings and struck out six Knights while walking none.
Indiana Wesleyan was able to provide more of a cushion for Vannoy than Worrell received in the first game. IWU scored in the first and tacked on two runs in each the fifth and sixth innings.
Fletcher was 3-for-4 at the plate with two runs scored and two RBIs. Third baseman Jonathan Bastian was 1-for-3 with two runs.
Indiana Wesleyan is now 11-17 this season and 2-0 in the MCC. Marian drops to 11-13 and 0-2 in conference play.
The Wildcats return to play on Thursday, March 26 as Indiana Wesleyan continues MCC play at University of Saint Francis in Fort Wayne, Indiana.
