Box Score MARION, Ind. -- Four players scored 14 or more points as Indiana Wesleyan University defeated Trinity International (Ill.) University 88-72 in men's basketball action on Saturday afternoon in Luckey Arena.
The victory is the fifth straight for Indiana Wesleyan as IWU moves to 10-3 on the season.
Wildcat senior guard Spencer Harris lifted the team with a spectacular outing. Harris contributed season highs with 16 points and eight assists. He shot 6-of-9 from the field and 3-of-4 from deep.
Senior center Zach Coverstone earned a double-double with 19 points and 10 rebounds in addition to four blocked shots. Freshman George Jones IV scored a career high 16 points on 7-of-11 shooting and he pulled down seven boards. Freshman guard Aaron Martin, starting in place of second leading scorer Will Hubertz due to injury, added 14 points.
Indiana Wesleyan sprinted out to a 14-0 advantage as Trinity International did not connected on their first bucket until a 3-point shot by junior guard Tyrone Smith with 14:19 in the half. The lead was stretched to 16 points following a 3-pointer by IWU senior guard Spencer Harris to give IWU the 21-5 cushion with 12:52 before intermission.
The Trojans slowly cut into the lead throughout the rest of the half. TIU brought the score to 35-30 and 2:19 to go courtesy to a 9-1 run.
Harris pushed the Indiana Wesleyan lead back to double digits as he completed the scoring in the half with a pair of 3-point baskets. IWU led 41-30 at the half.
With Indiana Wesleyan leading 47-33 early in the second half, Trinity International ran off a 16-3 run to trail by just one point at 50-49 and 13:47 on the clock.
Minutes later with the Wildcats lead at two points, Coverstone scored five straight points to advance the IWU lead to 59-52 midway through the half. But the Trojans answered with buckets by junior guard Patrick Atkins in back-to-back possessions to bring it to a one possession game at 61-58. Atkins ended the afternoon with game-highs of 20 points and 11 rebounds.
But once again Indiana Wesleyan responded, this time with a 9-2 run to lead 70-60 with 6:50 remaining. Trinity International answered IWU and cut the score to 73-68 and less than five minutes remained.
Indiana Wesleyan would close the door on any Trinity International comeback attempt as the Wildcats tallied 15 of the final 19 points of the contest for the 88-72 victory.
The Wildcats dished out a season-high 25 assists on the day and out-rebounded the Trojans 43-35. IWU took 73 shots in the game which is eight more than any other contest this season while hitting of 49.3-percent (36-73).
Indiana Wesleyan also won the turnover battle as IWU committed just 13 in the game while forcing 20 TIU turnovers. Indiana Wesleyan had 12 steals with Martin and Harris each earning three steals apiece.
The Wildcats take an extended break from action for final exams and Christmas. IWU will not take the court again until December 29-30 when the Wildcats compete in the Notre Dame (Ohio) Tournament. IWU will battle University of Toronto (Canada) on December 29 and will play either Notre Dame or Siena Heights (Mich.) University on December 30.
