Box Score MARION, Ind. -- Indiana Wesleyan University men's basketball connected on 10 3-point baskets to upset previously undefeated and NAIA DII No. 2-ranked Bethel (Ind.) College by a 73-67 score on Tuesday night in Luckey Arena.
Bethel made eight more field goals in the game than Indiana Wesleyan, but IWU dominated Bethel from beyond the arc and at the free throw line. Indiana Wesleyan finished 10-of-19 (52.6-percent) from deep and earned 17 more trips to the free throw line.
The Wildcats would never trail in the contest despite second leading scorer Will Hubertz still out of action with injury.
Indiana Wesleyan (6-3, 1-1 MCC) blitzed Bethel from the opening tip-off with the game's first seven points. During the stretch, senior forward Josh Williams came up huge with two baskets for four of his five points on the evening.
Bethel finally drew even with seven minutes remaining in the opening half when senior guard Tony Benford hit a field goal to tie the score at 20-20. But Indiana Wesleyan senior guard Ryan Hetrick hit 3-point buckets on back-to-back possessions to regain a six point advantage of 26-20. Hetrick ended the night with a team-high 18 points on 6-of-9 shooting from deep.
The six point lead would hold until halftime as the Wildcats led 37-31 at the break.
Indiana Wesleyan would extend their lead to eight points for the first time all night when junior center Sebastian Weber scored in the paint for a 47-39 Wildcat lead six minutes into the second half.
But the Pilots responded over the next five minutes with an 11-4 stretch to close the gap to 51-50.
Indiana Wesleyan held strong and did not allow Bethel to take their first lead of the contest courtesy of an 11-2 run over the next four minutes. IWU freshman guard Aaron Martin stroked a pair of 3-pointers to push
the Wildcat lead to its largest of the night at 62-52 and 4:34 remaining. Martin finished the game with 13 points and was 4-of-8 from deep.
Wildcat sophomore guard Derrick Troyer hit two free throws with 1:37 on the clock to push the IWU lead to seven at 67-60, but Benford hit his only 3-point basket of the night on the next Bethel possession to make it a four point contest. Benford ended the night with a game-high 24 points.
Following an Indiana Wesleyan turnover, Bethel junior guard Caleb Laidig was fouled and hit two free throws to bring the score to 67-65 and 1:01 left. IWU senior guard Spencer Harris was fouled on the other end and hit 1-of-2 free throws for a 68-65 advantage.
Bethel (6-1, 1-1 MCC) had a chance to tie the game or cut the lead to one, but a missed shot and Indiana Wesleyan rebounded would send Harris right back to the charity stripe. He hit both free throws for a 70-65 lead with 33 seconds still on the clock.
Indiana Wesleyan put the game away with three additional free throws for the 73-67 victory.
IWU senior center Zach Coverstone just missed his fifth double-double of the season with nine points and 11 rebounds.
The Wildcats will exit Mid-Central College Conference play for the remainder of December. Their next games will be this weekend at the St. Xavier Tournament in Chicago, Illinois. IWU will play St. Xavier at 9 p.m. ET on Friday, December 4 and will have a rematch of the 2009 NAIA National Championship First Round with Trinity Christian (Ill.) College at 2 p.m. ET on Saturday, December 5.
