Box Score MARION, Ind. -- Indiana Wesleyan University men's basketball set a program record with 16 3-pointers in a 98-55 victory over Indiana Tech in the IWU home opener on Tuesday night.
The Wildcats did little wrong in their first game at Luckey Arena this season. IWU set a new single game 3-point record with 16 3-pointers made, breaking the old mark of 15 which was set in 1991 versus Anderson (Ind.) University.
Indiana Wesleyan shot 64.0-percent on 16-of-25 from beyond the arc and 55.7-percent (34 of 61) overall.
IWU scored the game's first nine points of the contest and 12 of the first 13 as Indiana Tech never threatened. The Wildcats held a 23-14 advantage with 8:20 left on the clock before the break. IWU then went on a 29-10 run to finish the half and hold a commanding 52-24 halftime lead.
The second half mirrored the opening period as Indiana Wesleyan controlled every facet of the game. The 43 point margin of victory as the game came to a close was the largest lead for IWU all night.
Five Wildcats hit on 3-pointers with all five hitting multiple deep shots. Junior forward Will Hubertz was 5-of-9 and freshman guard Aaron Martin connected on 4-of-7. Senior guard Ryan Hetrick finished a perfect 3-of-3 and sophomore guard Derrick Troyer also did not miss at 2-for-2. Sophomore guard David Peters hit the record breaking basket and ended at 2-for-3 from long distance.
Hubertz ended the evening with a game-high 21 points and he also grabbed five rebounds. Senior center Zach Coverstone finished with 15 points, six boards and four blocked shots while Martin contributed 12 and Hetrick 11.
Senior guard Spencer Harris dished out six assists without committing a turnover and Hetrick followed suit with five assists and no turnovers. IWU completed the contest with 23 assists.
Indiana Wesleyan will once again take to the road for their next game as the Wildcats travel to Canton, Ohio for a showdown with Malone (Ohio) University with a 4 p.m. tip-off on Saturday, November 21.
