Box Score CEDARVILLE, Ohio -- Junior forward Elaine Hessel had her second straight huge game to lead No. 14-ranked Indiana Wesleyan University women's basketball to an 82-78 overtime win over No. 11-ranked Cedarville (Ohio) University.
The Wildcats went unbeaten at the Cedarville Tournament as Hessel was named tournament MVP. After scoring 29 points on Friday night, Hessel came up big for the Wildcats with 26 points against the Wildcats' toughest competition of the season.
Hessel was 10-of-15 shooting and 5-of-5 from the free throw line. She pulled down five rebounds in 44 minutes of action.
Indiana Wesleyan (3-0) held a six point lead at the half as they led 43-37.
Cedarville (1-1) responded in the second half and tied the score at 69-69 with less than a minute remaining in regulation. IWU took a two point lead with 18 seconds left but Cedarville forced overtime with a driving layup with two seconds remaining for a 71-71 tie.
The Wildcats went into overtime and tallied 11 of the 18 points scored in the extra session to escape Cedarville with the giant victory.
Junior guard Kayla Thompson was named to the all-tournament team as she added 21 points and nine rebounds today. Thompson shot 6-of-9 from the floor and 5-of-6 from beyond the arc. Junior forward LeAnn Douglas scored 16 points on 7-of-11 shooting while sophomore guard Rachel Steinbarger chipped in with 10 points.
Indiana Wesleyan shot 50.9-percent (27 of 53) from the floor and 50.0-percent (7 of 14) from 3-point range.
The Wildcats will return to Luckey Arena for their next contest as Indiana Wesleyan hosts IU-South Bend at 6 p.m. on Saturday, November 17.
