UPLAND, Ind. -- Taylor (Ind.) University won both games against Indiana Wesleyan University in a baseball doubleheader on Tuesday afternoon in Upland, Indiana.
The Trojans won by scores of 9-2 and 10-2 over the Wildcats to pull even at 14-14 overall and 6-6 in the Mid-Central College Conference. IWU falls to 19-13 and 12-6 in conference play.
In the opener, Indiana Wesleyan jumped out to an early 1-0 lead in the top of the first, but Taylor responded with a pair of runs to lead 2-1 after one. Taylor tacked on four more runs in the fourth inning to lead 6-1 and was never threatened again en route to the 9-2 victory. Taylor out-hit Indiana Wesleyan 8-3.
Two of the three Wildcat hits were solo home runs. Junior center fielder Kory Hollensteiner led off the game with the big hit and freshman second baseman Derek Freds blasted one in the fifth for the lone Indiana Wesleyan runs in the contest.
Junior Joshua Worrell (3-2) was the losing pitcher for the Wildcats. He allowed six runs on six hits in 3-2/3 innings.
Game two was very similar to the first game as a Hollensteiner home run pushed IWU to an early 1-0 lead. But once again Taylor responded in the bottom half of the first inning as the Trojans plated four runs. Taylor added two more runs in the second inning for a 6-1 advantage and cruised to the 10-2 win.
Taylor out-hit Indiana Wesleyan 13-3 in the game as IWU senior Matt Burthay (2-3) was charged with the loss. He gave up nine runs ? six earned ? in four innings.
Indiana Wesleyan looks to rebound on Thursday, April 10 as the Wildcats will host Taylor in a doubleheader rematch. First pitch is scheduled for 4 p.m.
