MARION, Ind. -- Indiana Wesleyan University was eliminated from the Mid-Central College Conference Tournament on Wednesday after losses to the top two seeded teams.
No. 5-seed Indiana Wesleyan lost a 3-2 lead in the ninth inning as No. 2-seed Huntington (Ind.) University escaped with a 5-3 lead. The Wildcats then faced top-seeded Spring Arbor (Mich.) University, after Spring Arbor was upset by No. 6-seed University of Saint Francis. IWU fell to Spring Arbor 3-2.
Senior right fielder Matt Burthay led the Wildcats in the opening game against Huntington with a 2-for-3 performance. He also walked once and scored a run. Senior Brandon Moore went the distance on the mound and struck out eight Foresters.
In the second game, Spring Arbor captured a 3-0 lead before Indiana Wesleyan could answer with two runs in the eighth. The Wildcats had the potential tying run on base in the ninth but were unable to move him to second.
Indiana Wesleyan is now 26-21 this season and will next play in the NCCAA Midwest Regional Tournament in Cedarville, Ohio.
