MISHAWAKA, Ind. -- Pitching dominated play during the Indiana Wesleyan University baseball doubleheader with Bethel (Ind.) College on Thursday afternoon in Mishawaka, Indiana.
Indiana Wesleyan scored single runs in the sixth and seventh innings to overcome Bethel 2-1 in the opening game. The Pilots answered in the second contest with a 2-0 shutout to even the season series.
Wildcat junior Joshua Worrell earned the victory on the mound for IWU as he allowed one unearned run in six innings. He scattered five hits and struck out three Pilots. Junior Brandon Beachy pitched the seventh inning and struck out two to earn his fifth save of the season.
Senior third baseman Jeff Pierce singled home the game-winning run in the final inning to give the Wildcats the victory. Senior left fielder Shay Harden was 2-for-4 with the other Indiana Wesleyan RBI.
IWU rapped out seven hits in the game.
The nightcap featured another game dominated by pitching. Each team was limited to five hits, but Bethel was able to plate single runs in the first and second innings to earn the split.
Senior Matt Burthay tallied a complete game for the Wildcats. He allowed two runs on five hits and struck out three.
Pierce was the only Wildcat with multiple hits in the game as he was 2-for-3 at the plate.
The two teams will finish their regular season series at 1 p.m. on Saturday, April 5 as Indiana Wesleyan hosts Bethel at the Outdoor Sports Complex.
