MARION, Ind. -- A three-run ninth inning by Indiana Tech spoiled a three home run performance by the Indiana Wesleyan University baseball team in a 6-5 loss on Thursday as the Wildcats celebrated Senior Day.
Three ninth inning errors led to three Indiana Tech runs as the Warriors overcame a two run deficit in the final inning of play to escape with the victory.
A total of 10 pitchers were used in the game by the two teams in the non-conference tilt. Junior Jake Scholfield was the pitcher of record for Indiana Wesleyan as he allowed three unearned runs in the ninth inning.
Indiana Wesleyan (24-19) trailed 3-1 in the fifth inning before back-to-back home runs by senior catcher Ryan Moore and freshman designated hitter Kyle Beachy knotted the game at 3-3.
IWU junior center fielder Kory Hollensteiner smashed a two-run homer in the seventh inning to hand the Wildcats a 5-3 advantage. Hollensteiner ended the game 4-for-5 with a home run, two doubles and three RBIs.
This led to the three run Indiana Tech (25-20) ninth inning, giving the visitors a 6-5 lead.
Indiana Wesleyan threatened in their final at bat as the Wildcats had the tying run on third base and the winning run on first base with one out. But a double play ended the game and the IWU threat.
Wildcat senior shortstop Jeff Pierce finished the evening 3-for-4 with two doubles and two runs scored.
Indiana Wesleyan will return to the diamond at 3 p.m. on Saturday, April 26 as the Wildcats will host a Mid-Central College Conference play in series with an opponent still to be determined. Saturday will feature two nine-inning games.
