Men?s Basketball Survives Double Overtime to Advance to NCCAA Championship Game

OAKLAND CITY, Ind. -- Indiana Wesleyan University won a wild NCCAA Men?s Basketball semifinal game 100-94 over Dallas Baptist (Texas) University on Wednesday night in Oakland City, Indiana.

The Wildcats looked to have the game in hand with three minutes remaining in regulation as Indiana Wesleyan led 74-61, but Dallas Baptist ended regulation on a 15-2 run to push the game into overtime with the teams tied at 76-76. Dallas Baptist connected on a 3-point basket with seven seconds remaining to force extra time.

The Patriots led throughout much of the first overtime. Dallas Baptist held an 86-83 advantage with under 20 seconds on the clock. IWU sophomore guard Spencer Harris drove the length of the floor and hit a runner and was fouled with 13 seconds remaining. Harris nailed the free throw to knot the score at 86-86.

Indiana Wesleyan held strong on the defensive side of the floor and forced a second overtime.

The Wildcats jumped out to a 13-5 run in the first three and a half minutes of the second overtime to gain a 99-91 advantage which led to the eventual 100-94 victory and a spot in the NCCAA national championship game on Thursday night.

Sophomore center Zach Coverstone once again had a huge game for the Wildcats at the national tournament. Coverstone had a double-double with 16 points and 15 rebounds in the opener on Tuesday, but upped that tonight with a career-high 33 points. He also grabbed 10 rebounds and shot an Indiana Wesleyan program record 25 free throw attempts. Coverstone hit on 13 of those attempts.

For the night, Indiana Wesleyan shot 47 free throws as a team, connecting on 30.

Junior guard Antonio Murrell chipped in with 24 points, seven rebounds and four assists. Harris ended the evening with 19 points and junior guard Ryan Hetrick added 13.

Indiana Wesleyan advances to the NCCAA championship game at 9 p.m. ET on Thursday, March 20 against the winner of Spring Arbor (Mich.) University and Chowan (N.C.) University.
