Baseball Comes Up Short in Pair of One Run Games

MARION, IND.  - Indiana Wesleyan baseball faced off against Huntington in the final two games of their series with the Foresters. The Wildcats suffered a pair of narrow defeats, losing 5-4 in game one, and 6-5 in game two.

GAME ONE RECAP
  • In the first game, Huntington took an early lead in the first inning, scoring one unearned run after J. Fowler reached first on an error and later scored on a sacrifice groundout. The inning ended with Huntington leading 1-0.
  • Indiana Wesleyan finally broke through in the fifth inning when Ben Seitzinger singled down the left field line and Greg Vineyard followed with a two-run homer, putting the home team ahead 2-1.
  • In the sixth inning, Huntington tied the game at 2-2 with a run scored by a pinch runner after a double by K. Wilson and a single from Z. Pelletier.
  • The seventh inning saw the Wildcats regain the lead. Mark Snowden and Braxton Brosmer both walked, setting the stage for Vineyard, who reached on an error, allowing both runners to score. This put the red and grey ahead 4-3.
  • HU rallied in the ninth inning, scoring two runs on singles by O. Willard and K. Wilson, and a wild pitch brought home the go-ahead run. The Foresters closed out the game with a 5-4 victory.
  • Kevin Corcoran delivered a strong performance for the red and grey, pitching 6 innings and allowing just 1 earned run on 4 hits. Corcoran struck out 6 batters and walked 3, using 106 pitches to navigate the Foresters' lineup. Grayson Schneider came in as a relief, pitching 3 innings and conceding 3 earned runs on 6 hits while striking out 4 and walking 1.

GAME TWO RECAP
  • In the second game, Huntington jumped to an early lead in the first inning, scoring four runs. Z. Pelletier's double down the right-field line brought in two runs, and B. Kauffman's double added another, giving Huntington a 4-0 advantage. The Wildcats were unable to score in their half, leaving the score at Huntington 4, Indiana Wesleyan 0.
  • In the second inning, IWU got on the board when Nick Wiley scored on a single by Trevor Vojtkofsky, reducing Huntington's lead to 4-1.
  • Huntington extended its lead in the third inning with two additional runs. B. Kauffman's sacrifice fly and R. Anglin's single each brought in a run, increasing the score to 6-1 in favor of the Foresters.
  • Indiana Wesleyan responded in the fourth inning with a three-run rally. Cayden Jones, running for Jackson Mott, scored on a single by Carson Bush. Later, Mark Snowden's double to left field brought in two more runs, narrowing the gap to 6-4.
  • The seventh inning saw the Wildcats close the deficit further. With two outs, Greg Vineyard's double set the stage for Jake Thompson's RBI single, which brought Vineyard home, setting the score at Huntington 6, Indiana Wesleyan 5. The game concluded with the Foresters securing a close 6-5 victory over the red and grey.
  • Zach Troxel provided a strong performance out of the bullpen, tossing 4.2 scoreless innings, yielding only two hits and striking out five while maintaining a WHIP of 0.71.
