GOSHEN, Ind. - The Indiana Wesleyan baseball team continued their hot start to conference play, picking up three wins against Goshen across two days. The Wildcats picked up a win on Saturday 14-4 before game two was delayed for weather. On Monday IWU picked up where they left off, defeating Goshen 9-3 in game one and exploding in game two for a 20-2 win. The final game of the series is scheduled to be played on Monday, March 27th at 3:00 p.m.

GAME ONE HIGHLIGHTS

 

 

• With Goshen leading 2-1 in the 4th innings the Wildcat bats exploded, first with Evan Salmon picking up where he left off against IUPUC by knocking his 3rd homerun in 2 games. The Wildcats added two more runs in the inning off of Jake Thompson and Luke Roman singles.
• In the 5th, Lucas Goodin homered, Caleb Engelsman and Nick Wiley drove in 2 runs each on doubles, and a Greg Vineyard double brought Wiley home to give IWU a 10-2 lead.
• Thompson and Wiley each brought a run across with singles in the 6th and a Luke Roman sac fly brought Thompson home.
• Nick Wiley homered in the 8th to push the Wildcat lead to 14-4.
• Drue Young led the way on the mound with 4 strikeouts, and only 1 earned run in six innings of work.

 

GAME TWO HIGHLIGHTS

 

 

• Greg Vineyard got the scoring started on a Lucas Goodin double in the 3rd. A MJ Stavola sac bunt brought Goodin across for 2-0 IWU lead through 3 innings.
• A passed ball brought Quinn Willard home and a MJ Stavola sac fly scored Ty Mathews in the 5th.
• Goshen go ton the board in the 6th, but Evan Salmon hit another homerun in the 7th pushing the lead to 6-1. Caleb Engelsman scored on a Bryce Ginder single and Nick Wiley brought Ginder home on a 2 run homer for a 9-1 lead.
• The Maple Leafs added 2 runs late but the rotation of Evan Fry, Caleb Olsen, and Hunter Hoffman kept Goshen from mounting a run as IWU took the game 9-3.

 

GAME THREE HIGHLIGHTS

 

 

• MJ Stavola put IWU up early with a 3 run shot to left center in the 1st inning.
• A Caleb Engelsman 2 run single brought Evan Salmon and Ty Mathews home pushing the lead to 5-0.
• Stavola stayed hot, sending another ball over the center field fence also scoring Salmon. Nick Wiley followed in the inning with a 2 run homer of his own to extend the lead to 9-0 in the 5th.
• Ty Mathews got in on the homerun action in the 6th with another shot in center field. Stavola also scored in the inning on an Engelsman single.
• Goshen got a run in both the 6th and 7th innings to close the gap to 11-2.
• The Wildcat offense exploded in the 8th inning, scoring 9 runs to give IWU a 20-2 victory.
• Will Eldridge, Brennan Morehead, Grayson Knight, and Brock Buckley combined for 17 strikeouts, 3 hits, and only 2 runs.

 

BENJAMIN PERSPECTIVE

 

• " We had a lot of contributions today," said Head Coach Rich Benjamin. "Will Eldridge stayed in attack mode throughout his start and Caleb Olsen was huge out of the pen during a pivotal moment in game two. Hitters controlled the zone well and took advantage of the hitters counts."

  

NEXT TIME OUT

 

• IWU hosts the University of Saint Francis on a doubleheader on Friday with a 2:00 p.m. first pitch.
