BABINSKI WINS 600TH GAME AS IWU SWEEPS MAPLE LEAFS

MARION, Ind. – The No. 10 Indiana Wesleyan softball team recorded a sweep of Goshen by scores of 9-1 and 6-5 Tuesday afternoon. Head Coach Steve Babinski collected his 600th career win dating back 2004 when he first started his head coaching career at MidAmerica Nazarene.

GAME VITALS
  • GAME 1: IWU 9, Goshen 1
  • GAME 2: Wildcats 6, Maple Leafs 5
  • RECORDS: IWU 29-5; GC: 14-23

INSIDE THE BOX – Game 1
  • IWU plated three runs in the first and never looked back. The Wildcats held a 3-1 edge before scoring three more in the third and three in the sixth to end the game with the 9-1 mercy rule.
  • The Wildcats pounded out 10 hits in the contest – four of which went for extra bases. Chloe Tragresser had a pair of doubles while Addie Benham added one. Rebecca Schrad smashed a homer for the team's other extra-base hit.
  • In addition to Tragresser, Jennah Yost had a multi-hit game. Schrad led the squad with three RBI while Yost and Tragresser each came home twice.
  • The Wildcats got loose on the base paths, recording six steals (two from Becca Wyatt, one from Tragresser, Yost, Caroline Jones and Trinity Medina).
  • Alyssa Wagner was stellar in the circle, forcing 13 Maple Leafs to return back to the dugout via strikeouts. She faced just 19 batters and gave up one run on one hit in a 94-pitch complete game.
  • Yost singled and Tragresser reached on an error in the first stanza. With two down, Schrad cranked an 0-1 pitch over the center field fence for a round-tripper.
  • In the third inning, Kamryn Buck's single scored Tragresser and Jones for a 5-1 lead. Wyatt singled in Buck for a five-run advantage.
  • IWU closed out the game in the sixth. Kaycee Wisley singled and Wyatt came in as a pinch runner. Benham doubled in Wyatt. She was replaced by pinch runner Julianne Bell, who scored on an error moments later. Yost, who had singled, went to second on the error and scored on Tragresser's game-ending double.

INSIDE THE BOX – Game 2
  • Down 1-0 in the second inning, Wyatt reached on an error. With two down, Bell singled in Wyatt to make it 1-1.
  • Bell swiped second and third. After Yost walked, the Wildcats put runners at second and third on a Yost steal. Tragresser doubled home both runners. Miranda Wehrle reached on an error, allowing Tragresser to make it a 4-1 contest.
  • Leading 4-2 in the fourth, Yost reached on a one-out walk and promptly swiped second base. She raced home on Tragresser's single.
  • Goshen responded with a three-run sixth inning, but IWU would score the game-winning run in the bottom of the stanza. Bell reached on a lead-off hit and stole second base. With two down, Bell went to third and scored on Wehrle's deep double to right center field.
  • Danielle Munn worked 5.2 innings and had five strikeouts. Mckenzey Ridge tossed the final 1.1 frames to pick up the victory.
  • At the plate, Tragresser led everyone with three hits and three RBI. Bell had two hits and scored twice while Yost also scored twice. She was walked three times.
  • Bell and Yost had three steals apiece.

NEXT TIME OUT
  • The Wildcats take the field again Friday, Apr. 16 with a doubleheader starting at 4 p.m., at home against Bethel.
