BASEBALL SPLITS WITH LAWRENCE TECH, WIN STREAK HALTED AT 16

MARION, Ind. – The Indiana Wesleyan baseball team saw its 16-game winning streak snapped in the first game but bounced back for a 7-5 win over Lawrence Tech Wednesday afternoon.

INSIDE THE BOX SCORE – Game 1
  • Tye Thixton led off the first inning by reaching on an error and quickly took advantage of the miscue, stealing second base. After a sacrifice bunt pushed him to third, Tanner Killian's sacrifice fly made it 1-0.
  • Down 3-1 in the bottom of the fourth, Lucas Goodin reached on a one-out walk and scored on a triple by MJ Stavola.
  • The score remained at 3-2 until LTU plated five runs in the seventh inning. The Wildcats tried to record another dramatic comeback, but the squad could only muster a run off Nick Coy's solo blast for the 8-3 final.
  • IWU was held to just three hits in the game.
  • Janier Puente worked 3.2 innings and took the loss. He struck out two batters. Gabe Fleace worked the final 3.1 frames and had seven strikeouts.


THE STREAK
  • Indiana Wesleyan's program-best 16-game winning streak was snapped with the 8-3 loss. The winning streak was the longest since records dating back to 2006.


INSIDE THE BOX SCORE – Game 2
  • After the comeback bid in the first game fell short, IWU plated four runs in the sixth inning to overcome a 5-3 deficit for the win.
  • Trailing 3-0 in the second, Lucas Goodin doubled and scored on an error.
  • The Wildcats tied it in the third when Tanner Killian's triple plated Tye Thixton, who had reached on an error. On the same play, Denver Blinn crossed home plate.
  • Down 5-3 in the sixth, MJ Stavola led off the frame with a double. With two down, Thixton's double plated Stavola and Jeff Morton, who had come in for a pinch runner for Bryce Ginder. Blinn sent an 0-1 pitch over the center field fence for a three-run homer, giving the Wildcats a 7-5 lead.
  • Blinn accounted for three of the team's seven hits. He also drove in three runs. Blinn crossed home twice as did Thixton.
  • Brennan Morehead got the start on the mound. Eddie Spoelman, Mitchell Ayers and Parker Johnson all saw time in relief. Johnson worked 2.2 frames and picked up the victory.

  • The Wildcats take the field again Friday for a doubleheader at Goshen College. First pitch is slated for 1 p.m.
