FOOTBALL FALLS SHORT AT NO. 2 MARIAN

INDIANAPOLIS, Ind. – Indiana Wesleyan dropped a tightly contested 23-14 game at No. 2 Marian Saturday afternoon.


IWU STANDOUTS 
  • Brayden Smith hauled in three passes for a game-high 93 yards, including a long of 78. Smith averaged 31 yards per catch and registered a touchdown.
  • Charlie Hill averaged 14.8 yards per reception. He recorded four catches for 59 yards.
  • Xander Stokes completed 13 passes for 185 yards and a touchdown.
  • Defensively, Payton Markbury garnered 13 total tackles, including eight solo stops. For good measure he had a pass break-up.
  • Cameron Lauck and Ismael Avila each had 10 stops in the contest. Avila recorded 1.5 sacks while Lauck had two pass break-ups and forced a fumble.
  • Brayden Smith led the way with 93 all-purpose yards.


FIRST QUARTER
  • The home squad got on the board with a first-quarter touchdown to lead 7-0.


SECOND QUARTER
  • Just before halftime, Ryan Whiteman recorded a one-yard rush that crossed the goal line. Ben VonGunten's extra point knotted the score at 7-7 with 31 seconds to play in the half. Marin managed to score as time expired for a 13-7 lead at the break.


THIRD QUARTER
  • Brayden Smith hauled in a 78-yard pass from Xander Stokes, giving the Wildcats a 14-13 lead after Von Gunten's extra point sailed through the uprights. Marian regained the lead with 7:07 to play in the third quarter for a 20-14 edge.


FOURTH QUARTER
  • The home squad posted a 25-yard field goal with just over a minute to play, securing the 23-14 victory over the Wildcats.

RECORD BOOK
  • The 78-yard pass from Xander Stokes to Brayden Smith was the longest all-time passing play in school history as well as the longest receiving play.
  • Brayden Smith surpassed 1,800 career receiving yards. He also registered his 23rd all-time receiving score and his 24th overall. He also inches closer to 2,000 career all-purpose yards and would become the second player in IWU history to do so (Devodney Alford).
  • Ismael Avila added to his IWU-leading TFL total. He now has 19 in his career.


SERIES HISTORY
  • IWU trails the all-time series to Marian University 2-0. The squad also lost at home in 2019 by a score of 33-21.
