LATE COMEBACK SINKS FOOTBALL IN UPSET BID

MARION, Ind. – Indiana Wesleyan football surrendered a 10-point lead in the fourth quarter Saturday, falling 17-13 to No. 8 University of Saint Francis. 


IWU STANDOUTS
  • Josh Davidson recorded 15 solo stops and had 19 total tackles, including three for loss. Justin Frey recorded 12 tackles and an interception. Justin Johnson also had an interception.  
  • Stokes completed 12 passes for 111 yards and a touchdown.
  • Devodney Alford led everyone with 19 carries and 89 yards. He scored a touchdown and had a long of 24.
  • Brayden Smith led the squad with 47 receiving yards on four receptions. Charlie Hill scampered for 25 yards on one reception and scored a touchdown.


FIRST QUARTER
  • Neither team could score in the first stanza. After a three-and-out on its first possession, IWU picked up a first down on a Stokes to Smith pass, but the team could not continue the drive. St. Francis drove to the 10 yard line before the end of the quarter.

SECOND QUARTER
  • USF kicked a field goal to start the quarter, but the Wildcats answered with a touchdown on the ensuing drive. After getting to the 40-yard line, Alford carried for 24 yards. Two plays later, he scored for a 7-3 lead. With under 6:00 left before halftime, IWU scored on a Stokes to Hill play, covering 25 yards. The extra point was blocked, resulting in a 13-3 lead at halftime.  


THIRD QUARTER
  • Neither team could add to the scoreboard in a defensive struggle for the third quarter. Johnson intercepted a pass for the team's highlight.


FOURTH QUARTER
  • USF pulled within three after a touchdown with 7:00 to play. The visitors recorded a 65-yard drive to take a 17-13 lead with 1:02 to go. The Wildcats started the drive, earning a first down on a pass interference call. A personal foul put the ball at the 39 yard line, but the team could get no closer and a sack ended the team's chances for the win.


RECORD BOOK
  • Devodney Alford surpassed 1,500 rushing yards in his career. He now has 1,519.
  • The 15 unassisted tackles by Josh Davidson marks a single-game school record. The 19 total tackles also established a school record.


NEXT TIME OUT
  • IWU hosts returns to action Friday, March 26 at 7 p.m., when it hosts Taylor.
