No. 15 SOFTBALL OPENS 2021 WITH SWEEP OF MIDWAY

WESTFIELD, Ind. – No. 15 Indiana Wesleyan used a seventh-inning comeback in the first game to force extra innings and swept Midway. Game scores were 3-2 (8 innings) and 6-0. 

GAME VITALS
  • GAME 1: Indiana Wesleyan 3, Midway 2 (8 innings) 
  • GAME 2: Wildcats 5, Eagles 0

INSIDE THE BOX – Game 1
  • After IWU pounded out three hits in the first and left two stranded, Midway jumped on top with an unearned run in the bottom half of the stanza.
  • The Wildcats left runners on base in multiple innings, including two in the fifth.
  • Rebecca Schrad and Kamryn Buck pounded out back-to-back hits to lead off the top of the seventh. Two batters later, Kaycee Wisley pinch hit and reached first on an error, allowing Schrad to knot the game at 1-1. 
  • Laney Shaw's grounder to second allowed Buck to score, giving the Wildcats a 2-1 lead. The Eagles tied the game at 2-2 in the bottom of the stanza.
  • With the international tiebreaker rule in effect, Megan St. Pierre came in as a pinch runner and scored on an error by the third baseman on a Trinity Medina bunt single.
  • Alyssa Wagner worked two innings, striking out four to pick up the win.


FIRST OF MANY
  • Jennah Yost led off the game and reached base on a bunt in her first career at bat. Fellow freshman Elisa Koshy followed suit, knocking out a hit in her first plate appearance.


IN THE CIRCLE 
  • Junior Mckenzey Ridge worked six strong innings in the season opener. She struck out five batters and gave up just two hits. She gave up two runs, but only one was earned. 
  • Alyssa Wagner came in to relieve Ridge in the seventh and got out of a jam, striking out one and forcing another batter into a double play to end the stanza. Wagner tossed a perfect eighth inning, striking out the side to end the contest.


STRONG START
  • Elisa Koshy had a solid start to her Wildcat career. She pounded out three this in three at bats. 


INSIDE THE BOX – Game 2
  • IWU broke open the game in the fourth inning, plating three runs. Rebecca Schrad highlighted the frame with a two-run inside the park homer. Chloe Tragesser singled, moved to second on a grounder and scored on an Aubrie Eckert base hit.
  • The Wildcats struck for two more runs in the fifth. Jennah Yost recorded an infield single and later scored on Tragesser's base hit to left. Schrad scored on the same play, but on an error by the left fielder to make it 5-0.
  • IWU tacked on a run in the seventh when Zoe Fountain came in as a pinch runner and scored on a wild pitch.
  • Alyssa Wagner threw five scoreless frames. She gave up just five hits and had two strikeouts while throwing 74 total pitches. Danielle Munn worked two innings, giving up one hit while throwing three strikeouts.

  • The Wildcats take the field again Monday, March 1 at St. Thomas University in Miami Gardens, Fla. IWU will play a doubleheader starting at 2 p.m.
