Record Setting Season Comes to a Close for Women?s Tennis

MOBILE, Ala. -- No. 1 Georgia Gwinnett beat No. 8 Indiana Wesleyan University women’s tennis 5-0 in the NAIA National Championship Quarterfinals in Mobile, Alabama. The loss brings a close to the historic season that witnessed many new records and firsts in program history.

What Went Down

  • Georgia Gwinnett earned a sweep in doubles matches to take a 3-0 lead.
  • Katie Wilson (SR/Middletown, Ind.) and Lucia Solis (FR/Tucuman, Argentina) were defeated 8-0 at No. 1-doubles.
  • Alex Mella (FR/Libertyville, Ill.) and Rachel Bottorff (JR/Newburgh, Ind.) lost an 8-2 decision at No. 2-doubles.
  • Ellen Hornett (JR/Fishers, Ind.) and Kelsey Vessels (JR/Roanoke, Ind.) fell 8-1 at No. 3-doubles.
  • Georgia Gwinnett wrapped up the team victory by winning the first two singles matches for the 5-0 win.
  • Katie Wilson lost 6-1, 6-0 at No. 1-singles and Mikayla Marazzi (JR/Abbotsford, BC) was defeated 6-1, 6-0 at No. 5-singles.
  • When the match was completed, Rachel Bottorff had won the first set at No. 3-singles 6-4. Alex Mella was playing No. 4-singles and lost her first set 6-0 but was leading 3-2 in the second set.

  • The NAIA National Championship Quarterfinal match was the first in program history.

     

Next Time Out

  • Indiana Wesleyan ends the best season in program history. IWU won a program record 33 matches, advanced farther in the NAIA National Championship than any IWU women’s tennis team in history, won the NCCAA National Championship, and tied a program record with a No. 8 ranking in the NAIA Top-25 Poll. Indiana Wesleyan defeated three teams that were ranked in the Top-10, which are the first three such wins in program history.
