Women?s Tennis Wins Pool, Advances to NCCAA Semifinals

MOBILE, Ala. -- Indiana Wesleyan University women’s tennis defeated Dallas Baptist (Texas) 5-3 to win Pool A and advance to the NCCAA national semifinals. Indiana Wesleyan won their 30th match of the season for the first time in program history.

What Went Down

  • Indiana Wesleyan built an early lead with wins in two of three doubles matches.
  • Katie Wilson (SR/Middletown, Ind.) and Lucia Solis (FR/Tucuman, Argentina) won 8-4 at No. 1-doubles while Alex Mella (FR/Libertyville, Ill.) and Rachel Bottorff (JR/Newburgh, Ind.) also won 8-4 at No. 2-doubles.
  • Ellen Hornett (JR/Fishers, Ind.) and Kelsey Vessels (JR/Roanoke, Ind.) dropped an 8-4 decision at No. 3-doubles.
  • Lucia Solis won 7-5, 6-3 at No. 2-singles, Rachel Bottorff captured a 6-4, 4-6, 6-4 win at No. 3-singles, and Marissa Klein (FR/Evansville, Ind) finished a 6-3, 6-1 victory at No. 6-singles.
  • Katie Wilson was defeated 7-5, 6-3 at the top position and Alex Mella lost 7-5, 6-3 at No. 4-singles.
  • Mikayla Marazzi (JR/Abbotsford, BC) was up 3-6, 6-4, 4-3 at No. 5-singles but the match was left unfinished as IWU won the fifth and decisive team point.

Next Time Out

  • Indiana Wesleyan won Pool A with a 2-0 record and advances to the NCCAA national semifinals on Thursday. IWU will play the second place team from Pool B in the semifinals which is Belhaven (Miss.). That match at 10 a.m. ET.
