Women?s Tennis Edges Grand Valley State, 5-4

MARION, Ind. -- Indiana Wesleyan University women’s tennis has tied the school record for wins in a season with 26 as they defeated Grand Valley State (Mich.) 5-4 at the Sutter Tennis Center. GVSU is a NCAA Division II program that has already qualified for the national tournament.

What Went Down

  • Katie Wilson (SR/Middletown, Ind.) and Lucia Solis (FR/Tucuman, Argentina) won 8-5 at No. 1-doubles while Rachel Bottorff (JR/Newburgh, Ind.) and Alex Mella (FR/Libertyville, Ill.) gained an 8-3 win at No. 2-doubles. Kelsey Vessels (JR/Roanoke, Ind.) and Ellen Hornett (JR/Fishers, Ind.) lost 8-6 at the No. 3 spot.
  • Indiana Wesleyan took a 2-1 lead into singles play where the two teams split 3-3.
  • Katie Wilson won 3-6, 6-1, 6-2 at the top position and Lucia Solis was victorious 6-2, 6-4 from No. 2-singles. Alex Mella pulled out a 7-6, 5-7, 6-3 victory at No. 4-singles.
  • Rachel Bottorff lost 6-7, 6-4, 6-0 at No. 3-singles and Mikayla Marazzi (JR/Abbotsford, BC) was defeated 6-3, 2-6, 6-2 at No. 5-singles. Marissa Klein (FR/Evansville, Ind) lost 7-5, 6-3 at No. 6-singles.

  • “The girls battled hard and played well today. Grand Valley State is a really good team. They have already qualified for the NCAA DII National Tournament.
