MISHAWAKA, Ind. -- Indiana Wesleyan University women’s tennis continues their torrid pace to begin the 2015 fall season as they defeated previously unbeaten Bethel (Ind.) 8-0 on Tuesday afternoon in Mishawaka, Indiana.
The match was played indoors with the threat of rain looming. The No. 3-doubles match was not played due to limited courts.
“In the eight matches we played we had 10 different girls,” said Indiana Wesleyan head coach Eddy Shigley. “We only lost 13 games in eight matches. The girls are playing very focused tennis and we hope that continues as we play IU Southeast and NCAA DII Bellarmine (Ky.) next weekend.”
Indiana Wesleyan won the two doubles matches that were contested. Kelsey Vessels (JR/Roanoke, Ind.) and Ellen Hornett (JR/Fishers, Ind.) gained an 8-4 victory at No. 1 while the team of Courtney Clark (SO/Middlebury, Ind.) and Megan Smith were successful at No. 2 with an 8-2 victory.
“Courtney Clark and Morgan Smith (SO/Bremen, Ind.) played an amazing No. 2-doubles for us in front of many of their friends and family members since they both live near South Bend,” stated Shigley.
Indiana Wesleyan played even better at singles. Lucia Solis (FR/Tucuman, Argentina) won 6-2, 6-2 at No. 1-singles, Katie Wilson (SR/Middletown, Ind.) took a 6-2, 6-0 win at No. 2-singles, and Alex Mella (FR/Libertyville, Ill.) earned a 6-1, 6-0 victory at No. 4-singles. Rachel Bottorff (JR/Newburgh, Ind.) at No. 3, Mikayla Marazzi (JR/Abbotsford, BC) at No. 5, and Marissa Klein (FR/Evansville, Ind) at No. 6 all won by scores of 6-0, 6-0.
Indiana Wesleyan plays a doubleheader on Saturday in non-league action. IWU plays IU Southeast in New Albany, Indiana at 9 a.m. and then Bellarmine in Louisville, Kentucky at 2 p.m.
