GOSHEN, Ind. -- Indiana Wesleyan University men’s tennis suffered a heartbreaking defeat on Saturday in a 5-4 decision at Goshen (Ind.) in Crossroads League action in Goshen, Indiana.
The match was tied 4-4 with No. 4-singles the last combatants on the courts. Aritha Weerasinghe defeated Leonard Mathews (SR/Merrillville, Ind.) 7-5, 1-6, 6-3 in that match to secure the 5-4 victory for the Maple Leafs.
Indiana Wesleyan led 2-1 following doubles play for the early advantage. Mathews and Gavin White (JR/Lakeland, Fla.) won 8-5 at No. 1-doubles while Brandon Dubuque (SR/Marion, Ind.) and Austin Christner (SO/Goshen, Ind.) took No. 3-doubles with an 8-6 victory. The No. 2-doubles team of Joel Montgomery (SO/Powell, Ohio) and Tyler Abbott (FR/Atlanta, Ga.) lost in a tight 9-8 contest.
In singles, Goshen took four of six matches to overcome the deficit after doubles matches.
Montgomery won 6-2, 6-4 at No. 3-singles while Abbott was victorious 6-0, 7-6 in the No. 5-singles contest. White lost 6-2, 6-2 in the top billing and Dubuque lost 6-4, 6-1 in the No. 2 pairing. Mathews lost at No. 4 and Christner was defeated 6-1, 6-4 in the No. 6 match.
Indiana Wesleyan falls to 0-2 this season with both losses being 5-4 defeats in league play. IWU looks for a positive result on Tuesday at 2:30 p.m. as they play Bethel (Ind.) in Mishawaka, Indiana.
