MARION, Ind. -- The Indiana Wesleyan University women’s tennis team showcased its depth on Saturday by defeating Goshen (Ind.) and Indiana Tech at the same time at the Sutter Tennis Center.
Indiana Wesleyan used 14 players in a split squad to beat both Goshen and Indiana Tech by 9-0 scores. With 14 different players, Indiana Wesleyan lost just 22 games in the 18 matches.
“It was a fun day,” said Indiana Wesleyan head coach Eddy Shigley. “We had great weather and a good crowd of fans and family members watching.”
In the Crossroads League contest with Goshen, Indiana Wesleyan dropped just 10 games en route to the victory.
Rachel Bottorff (JR/Newburgh, Ind.) and Alex Mella (FR/Libertyville, Ill.) at No. 1-doubles and the team of Courtney Siepman (SR/Plainfield, Ind.) an d Morgan Smith (SO/Bremen, Ind.) at No. 2-doubles both won by 8-0 scores. Stephanie Felker (SR/Brookfield, Wis.) and Makenzie Estrem (SO/Greenwood, Ind.) earned the point at No. 3-doubles with an 8-3 victory
In singles, Bottorff at No. 1 and Smith at No. 6 both won 6-0, 6-1 while Mella at No. 2 and Courtney Clark (SO/Middlebury, Ind.) at No. 5 each claimed 6-1, 6-0 victories. Siepman was perfect at 6-0, 6-0 at No. 3 while Gabby D’Aniello won 6-0, 6-3 at No. 4.
Indiana Wesleyan dropped just 12 games as they went on to the 9-0 win against Indiana Tech.
Katie Wilson (SR/Middletown, Ind.) and Lucia Solis (FR/Tucuman, Argentina) won 8-2 in the No. 1 match while Kelsey Vessels (JR/Roanoke, Ind.) and Ellen Hornett (JR/Fishers, Ind.) took the No. 2 point with an 8-0 victory. Mikayla Marazzi (JR/Abbotsford, BC) and Marissa Klein (FR/Evansville, Ind) won No. 3 by forfeit as Indiana Tech could only field five players.
In singles, Wilson at No. 1 and Vessels at No. 5 both won by scores of 6-0, 6-1. Solis won 6-2, 6-0 at No. 2 while Marazzi took a 6-1, 6-0 victory at No. 4. Klein pulled out a 6-2, 6-3 win at No. 4 while Hornett was credited with the win at No. 6 due to forfeit.
The pair of victories improve the Wildcts’ record to 3-0 this season and 2-0 in the Crossroads League.
Indiana Wesleyan next plays Bethel (Ind.) at 2:30 p.m. on Tuesday in Mishawaka, Indiana.
