MARION, Ind. -- Grace (Ind.) suffered their first loss of the season as Indiana Wesleyan University men’s tennis cruised to an 8-1 victory in the Crossroads League match played at Sutter Tennis Center in Marion.
Indiana Wesleyan improves to 3-2 this season and 2-2 in Crossroads League play. Grace is now 4-1 this season with all five matches being contested in the Crossroads League.
The Wildcats swept the Lancers in doubles matches to build the quick 3-0 advantage. Brandon Dubuque (SR/Marion, Ind.) and Gavin White (JR/Lakeland, Fla.) collected an 8-2 win in the top doubles match and the team of Tyler Abbott (FR/Atlanta, Ga.) and Joel Montgomery (SO/Powell, Ohio) won 8-6 in No. 2-doubles. Leonard Mathews (SR/Merrillville, Ind.) teamed with Austin Christner (SO/Goshen, Ind.) to wrap up the doubles sweep with an 8-5 win in the third position.
Indiana Wesleyan won five of six singles matches for the 8-1 team victory. All five IWU wins were in straight sets.
Dubuque won 6-1, 6-0 at No. 2-singles and Montgomery captured a 6-3, 7-5 victory at the No. 3 spot. Mathews earned a 7-5, 6-1 win at No. 4, Abbott finished a 6-0, 6-1 win at No. 5, and Christner won 6-2, 6-1 at No. 6-singles. White suffered the only loss for the Wildcats in a 3-6, 6-2, 11-9 defeat at No. 1-singles.
Indiana Wesleyan next competes at the ITA Midwest Regional Tournament in Grand Rapids, Michigan. The competition will be held September 17-19.
