Women?s Tennis Falls in NCCAA National Semifinals

MOBILE, Ala. -- The Indiana Wesleyan University women’s tennis team saw their run through the NCCAA National Championship come to a close Thursday morning in a 5-0 loss to Dallas Baptist (Texas) in the national semifinals in Mobile, Alabama.

Indiana Wesleyan was one of two teams from their pool to advance to the national semifinal round. IWU fell one win shy of reaching the national title match tomorrow morning against Shorter (Ga.).

The No. 1-doubles team of Katie Wilson (JR/Middletown, Ind.) and Kim Mella (SR/Libertyville, Ill.) played the tightest contest Thursday in a 9-8 (10-8) loss. The No. 2 team of Rachel Bottorff (SO/Newburgh, Ind.) and Kelsey Vessels (SO/Roanoke, Ind.) was defeated 8-4 and the No. 3 team of Diane Jones (SR/Greenwood, Ind.) and Ellen Hornett (SO/Fishers, Ind.) lost 8-2.

Courtney Siepman (JR/Plainfield, Ind.) lost No. 3-singles by a 6-3, 6-2 score while Vessels was defeated 6-0, 6-1 at No. 4-singles. The last four singles matches were left unfinished since Dallas Baptist secured the 5-0 team victory.

Following the match the NCCAA announced All-Tournament Team honors. Katie Wilson was honored for the Wildcats as an All-Tournament Team selection.

Indiana Wesleyan remains in Mobile as they begin the NAIA National Championship next week. IWU will battle Northwestern Ohio on Tuesday, May 12.
