MOBILE, Ala. -- One of the most successful seasons in Indiana Wesleyan University men’s tennis history came to a close on Tuesday in a 7-2 loss to No. 12-seed Northwood (Fla.) in the NAIA National Championship First Round in Mobile, Alabama.
No. 21-seed Indiana Wesleyan finishes the campaign at 20-10 with a Crossroads League Tournament championship. The 20 wins is a new program record that bettered the 19 win season two years ago in 2012-13.
The First Round match opened on Tuesday with three tightly contested doubles matches. Indiana Wesleyan captured one of those contests as Joel Montgomery (FR/Powell, Ohio) and Adam Wroughton (SR/Schereville, Ind.) won 9-7 in the No. 3 match. The No. 1-doubles team of Kyle Johnson (SR/East Moline, Ill.) and Brandon Dubuque (JR/Marion, Ind.) and the No. 2-doubles team of Leonard Mathews (JR/Merrillville, Ind.) and Gavin White (SO/Lakeland, Fla.) both lost by 8-5 scores.
Austin Christner (FR/Goshen, Ind.) captured the lone Wildcat point in singles play with a 6-1, 7-5 win at No. 6-singles. Joel Montgomery won the first set 6-4 at No. 4-singles but was forced to retire while trailing 4-2 in the second set.
Johnson lost the No. 1-singles battle 7-5, 6-3 while Mathews dropped a 6-3, 6-1 decision at No. 2-singles. Dubuque lost 6-2, 6-0 at No. 3-singles and White was defeated 6-3, 6-0 at No. 5-singles.
The NAIA National Championship appearance was the fifth in Wildcat history and the first since 2010.
