MARION, Ind. -- Indiana Wesleyan University men’s tennis defeated Cedarville (Ohio) 9-0 on Thursday evening in the NCCAA Midwest Regional Final to advance to the NCCAA National Championship.
The national championship tournament will be held May 5-8 in Mobile, Alabama. Eight teams advance to Mobile and will be split into two pools of four teams each. The top two teams from each pool advance to the semifinals which begin on May 7. The championship match is set for May 8.
Indiana Wesleyan had no issues as they earned the Midwest region’s automatic bid to the national tournament on Thursday. IWU lost just five games in doubles play and then swept singles without dropping a set.
Kyle Johnson (SR/East Moline, Ill.) and Brandon Dubuque (JR/Marion, Ind.) won the No. 1-doubles match 8-4. Leonard Mathews (JR/Merrillville, Ind.) and Gavin White (SO/Lakeland, Fla.) won at No. 2-doubles by an 8-1 margin while Adam Wroughton (SR/Schereville, Ind.) and Joel Montgomery (FR/Powell, Ohio) won No. 3-doubles 8-0.
In singles play, Johnson won 6-1, 7-5 in the top position and Mathews earned a 6-1, 6-3 victory at No. 2-singles. Dubuque earned a point at No. 3-singles with a 6-2, 6-2 win and Montgomery won 6-1, 6-0 at No. 4. White was victorious 6-0, 6-4 at No. 5 play while Austin Christner (FR/Goshen, Ind.) won 6-2, 6-1 at No. 6-singles.
Indiana Wesleyan improves to 18-7 this year and 10-1 during the spring season.
