MARION, Ind. -- Indiana Wesleyan University women’s tennis completed the regular season on Saturday with 9-0 wins over Huntington (Ind.) and Taylor (Ind.) in the Mark Richards Classic at the Sutter Tennis Center.
Indiana Wesleyan opened play on Saturday with Huntington. IWU quickly built a 3-0 lead in doubles as Katie Wilson (JR/Middletown, Ind.) and Mikayla Marazzi (SO/Abbotsford, BC) won 8-4 at No. 1-doubles while the No. 2 team of Kelsey Vessels (SO/Roanoke, Ind.) and Rachel Bottorff (SO/Newburgh, Ind.) and the No. 3 team of Diane Jones (SR/Greenwood, Ind.) and Ellen Hornett (SO/Fishers, Ind.) each won by 8-1 scores.
IWU won five of the six singles matches in straight sets. Wilson won 6-1, 6-2 at the top position and Bottorff won 6-4, 6-2 at No. 2-singles. Courtney Siepman (JR/Plainfield, Ind.) collected a 6-4, 5-7, 12-10 win at No. 3-singles while Vessels cruised to a 6-1, 6-1 win at No. 4. Marazzi won 6-1, 6-2 at No. 5 and Morgan Smith (FR/Bremen, Ind.) easily won 6-0, 6-1 at No. 6.
In the afternoon match with Taylor, Indiana Wesleyan had another quick start with dominant play in doubles. Wilson and Marazzi teamed at No.1 to win 8-0. The No. 2 team of Bottorff and Vessels plus the No. 3 team of Jones and Hornett each won by identical 8-3 scores.
The Wildcats won all six singles matches in straight sets. Wilson played No. 1 and Marazzi competed in the No. 5 spot and each player won by 6-0, 6-0 scores. Bottorff won 6-0, 6-1 at No. 2-singles and Siepman finished with a 7-5, 6-2 victory at No. 3. Vessels won 6-3, 6-1 at No. 4 while Smith ended with a 6-0, 6-2 win at No. 6-singles.
Indiana Wesleyan next plays in the NCCAA National Championship. The tournament begins May 5 in Mobile, Alabama while the next week the NAIA National Championship takes place in the same location.
