MARION, Ind. -- Indiana Wesleyan University completed the 2014-15 regular season on Saturday with wins over IU Southeast and Taylor (Ind.) during the Mark Richards Classic at the Sutter Tennis Center.
Indiana Wesleyan heads into national tournament play on a three game win streak after a 9-0 win over Georgetown (Ky.) on Friday plus the two wins today. IWU is 17-7 overall and plays at the NCCAA National Championship beginning May 5 in Mobile, Alabama. The next week, Indiana Wesleyan competes in the NAIA National Championship at the same site.
IWU opened with a morning match against IU Southeast. Indiana Wesleyan won 9-0.
Kyle Johnson (SR/East Moline, Ill.) and Gavin White (SO/Lakeland, Fla.) won No. 1-doubles 8-4, Joel Montgomery (FR/Powell, Ohio) and Adam Wroughton (SR/Schereville, Ind.) earned a No. 2-doubles victory by an 8-5 margin, and the team of Daniel Smith (JR/Crown Point, Ind.) and Austin Christner (FR/Goshen, Ind.) won No. 3-doubles 8-2.
Johnson and Wroughton each had to win their singles matches in three sets. Johnson took the No. 1-singles point 6-4, 6-7, 10-5 while Wroughton won at No. 4 by scores of 7-6, 2-6, 11-9. Montgomery won 6-0, 6-1 at No. 2-singles, White earned a 6-0, 6-2 win at No. 3-singles, and Smith won 6-3, 6-1 in the No. 6 spot.
In the 7-2 victory over Taylor in the afternoon, Johnson and White won No. 1-doubles 8-0. Montgomery and Wroughton took an 8-5 win at No. 2 while Smith and Christner pulled out the 8-6 win at No. 3.
The Wildcats then won their four singles matches in two sets. Johnson won 6-0, 6-3 in the top position while Montgomery won 6-0, 6-2 at No. 2. White earned the 6-2, 6-4 win at No.3 and Smith finished with a 6-2, 6-3 win at No. 5-singles. Wroughton fell 7-6, 6-2 at No. 4 play while Caleb Cottrell (FR/Hudsonville, Mich.) lost 6-3, 6-3 at No. 6-singles.
