MARION, Ind. -- Despite and 8-1 loss to No. 19-ranked Campbellsville (Ky.), Indiana Wesleyan played the top-25 opponents tough on Saturday at the Sutter Tennis Center.
Indiana Wesleyan lost two doubles matches in tie breakers and the third by an 8-6 margin to fall behind 3-0. Leonard Mathews (JR/Merrillville, Ind.) was also injured for singles play which forced the rest of the lineup to move up one spot.
Kyle Johnson (SR/East Moline, Ill.) and Brandon Dubuque (JR/Marion, Ind.) fell 9-8 (7-4) in No.1-doubles while Mathews and Gavin White (SO/Lakeland, Fla.) dropped a 9-8 (7-4) decision at No. 2-doubles. The No. 3 team of Joel Montgomery (FR/Powell, Ohio) and Adam Wroughton (SR/Schereville, Ind.) lost 8-6.
Johnson collected the lone Indiana Wesleyan point on Saturday with a three set victory in No. 1-singles. Johnson won by scores of 6-3, 3-6, 11-9.
Dubuque lost 6-2, 6-0 at No. 2-singles, Montgomery moved up to No. 3-singles and dropped a 6-3, 6-0 match, and White was defeated 7-5, 6-3 at No. 4-singles. Daniel Smith (JR/Crown Point, Ind.) lost 6-4, 6-3 at No. 5-singles and Austin Christner (FR/Goshen, Ind.) lost 7-6, 6-4 at No. 6-singles.
Indiana Wesleyan is now 14-7 this season and 3-5 during the spring season.
The next matches for Indiana Wesleyan will be at the Mark Richards Classic on Friday and Saturday at the Sutter Tennis Center. IWU opens with Georgetown (Ky.) at 5 p.m. on Friday night.
