MARION, Ind. -- No. 25-ranked Indiana Wesleyan University women’s tennis earned a big win Saturday afternoon in the form of an 8-1 victory against #RV Campbellsville (Ky.) at the Sutter Tennis Center.
The win comes against a team receiving votes in the NAIA Poll as Indiana Wesleyan improves their record to 18-6 overall and 4-5 during the spring season.
“The team played great today,” said Indiana Wesleyan head coach Eddy Shigley. “We won the close games and consequently the close matches. Phenomenal focus today. They played great with tremendous heart and courage.”
Indiana Wesleyan swept through doubles matches to build an early 3-0 advantage. Katie Wilson (JR/Middletown, Ind.) and Kim Mella (SR/Libertyville, Ill.) won 9-8 (7-1) in No. 1-doubles, Rachel Bottorff (SO/Newburgh, Ind.) and Kelsey Vessel won No. 2-doubles by an 8-3 margin, and the No. 3 team of Diane Jones (SR/Greenwood, Ind.) and Ellen Hornett (SO/Fishers, Ind.) won 8-4.
Wilson won No. 1-singles, Bottorff won No. 2-singles, and Mikayla Marazzi (SO/Abbotsford, BC) won No. 6-singles all by identical scores of 6-1, 6-3. Vessels completed the victory at No. 4-singles with a 7-6 (7-5), 6-4 score while Mella won No. 5-singles 4-6, 7-5 (10-7). Courtney Siepman (JR/Plainfield, Ind.) fell 1-6, 3-6 in No. 3 play.
Indiana Wesleyan next competes at the Mark Richards Classic at the Sutter Tennis Center on April 17-18. Indiana Wesleyan opens with IU Southeast at 3 p.m. on Friday.
