FORT WAYNE, Ind. -- Indiana Wesleyan University women’s tennis gained a win on Tuesday at Indiana Tech by an 8-1 margin in Fort Wayne, Indiana.
The 25th-ranked Wildcats had lost five of their first six spring matches before the victory today. IWU is now 16-6 this season with a 2-5 mark during the spring season.
Indiana Wesleyan quickly built a 3-0 lead with a sweep in doubles play. Katie Wilson (JR/Middletown, Ind.) and Kim Mella (SR/Libertyville, Ill.) won 8-5 at the No. 1 position while Rachel Bottorff (SO/Newburgh, Ind.) and Kelsey Vessels (SO/Roanoke, Ind.) pulled out an 8-3 victory at No. 2. Indiana Tech played with just five players and did not field a No. 3-doubles team.
In singles matches, Indiana Wesleyan won four of the five positions plus the No. 6 spot since Indiana Tech did not have a player to fill the position.
Wilson made quick work at No. 1-singles with a 6-0, 6-0 win while Bottorff won 6-1, 6-0 at No. 2. Vessels won the point at No. 4-singles with a 6-4, 6-4 victory and Mella earned a 6-1, 6-2 win at No. 5-singles. Courtney Siepman (JR/Plainfield, Ind.) dropped a 3-6, 6-1, 9-11 decision at No. 3-singles.
Indiana Wesleyan next plays April 9 as they host Spring Arbor (Mich.) in the NCCAA Midwest Regional Championship at Sutter Tennis Center.
