GRAND RAPIDS, Mich. -- Indiana Wesleyan University men’s tennis began a weekend trip in Michigan with a pair of wins on Friday.
No. 23-ranked Indiana Wesleyan began the trip on Friday afternoon with a 7-2 victory at #RV Cornerstone (Mich.) and then completed the day with a 5-2 win at Davenport (Mich.). IWU improves to 15-4 this season.
Versus Cornerstone, Indiana Wesleyan leaped out to take a 2-1 lead after doubles play. Kyle Johnson (SR/East Moline, Ill.) and Brandon Dubuque (JR/Marion, Ind.) won No. 1-doubles 8-2 while Joel Montgomery (FR/Powell, Ohio) and Adam Wroughton (SR/Schereville, Ind.) took the 8-5 victory at No. 3-doubles. Gavin White (SO/Lakeland, Fla.) and Leonard Mathews (JR/Merrillville, Ind.) lost No. 2-doubles 8-1.
Indiana Wesleyan finished off Cornerstone with wins in five of the six singles matches. Johnson won 6-2, 6-2 at No. 1-singles, White earned a 6-2, 6-4 win at No. 2, and Mathews earned the point at No. 3 with a 6-3, 7-6 victory. Montgomery won 7-6, 6-0 at No. 4-singles and Austin Christner (FR/Goshen, Ind.) pulled out a 6-4, 6-2 win at No. 6. Dubuque retired at No. 5-singles when he was trailing 0-3.
The Wildcats returned to the courts later in the day as they defeated Davenport 5-2 in Grand Rapids.
For the second time on Friday, Indiana Wesleyan won two of three doubles matches for the early advantage. Mathews and White won a tightly fought 9-8 decision at No. 2 while Montgomery and Wroughton also won a competitive match at No. 3 with a 9-8 victory. Johnson and Dubuque fell 8-5 in the top battle.
Indiana Wesleyan completed the team victory with wins in three of the four singles matches that were finished as IWU wrapped up the 5-2 win. Johnson won 6-7, 6-3, 6-4 at No. 1-singles, Montgomery earned a 6-2, 6-1 win at No. 4, and Dubuque claimed a 6-2, 6-7, 6-4 victory at No. 5.
White was defeated 3-6, 1-6 at No. 2-singles. Mathews was tied 2-6, 6-2 at No. 3-singles while Christner led 7-6 when the match was called off.
