GRAND RAPIDS, Mich. -- Indiana Wesleyan University women’s tennis faced two top teams on Friday in part of a three match weekend swing through Michigan.
Indiana Wesleyan lost the opening match 5-0 to NCAA DII Grand Valley State (Mich.) and then traveled to Grand Rapids where they lost 5-4 to No. 18-ranked Davenport.
In the first match of the day, Indiana Wesleyan lost 5-0 at Grand Valley State. The match was halted once Grand Valley State reached the five points to earn the win since Indiana Wesleyan had the match later in the day with Davenport.
Katie Wilson (JR/Middletown, Ind.) and Kim Mella (SR/Libertyville, Ill.) lost No. 1 doubles 8-3, Rachel Bottorff (SO/Newburgh, Ind.) and Kelsey Vessels (SO/Roanoke, Ind.) fell 8-1 in No. 2-doubles, while Diane Jones (SR/Greenwood, Ind.) and Ellen Hornett (SO/Fishers, Ind.) dropped an 8-0 decision at No. 3-doubles.
The Wildcats lost the first two completed matches in singles before the match was called in favor of Grand Valley State. Vessels lost 0-6, 4-6 at No. 4-singles while Mella was defeated 0-6, 0-6 at No. 5-singles.
Indiana Wesleyan led two matches when the match was called off. Bottorff led 6-4, 4-3 at No. 2-singles and Courtney Siepman (JR/Plainfield, Ind.) held a 7-5, 1-2 advantage at No. 3-singles. Wilson trailed 2-6, 2-3 at No. 1 and Mikayla Marazzi (SO/Abbotsford, BC) was down 4-6, 4-3 when the match concluded.
In the nightcap, IWU gained the early lead with two wins in doubles. Wilson and Mella won No. 1-singles 8-5 while Jones and Hornett left with an 8-3 win at No. 3-doubles. Bottorff and Vessels dropped an 8-4 decision at No. 2-doubles.
Indiana Wesleyan earned a pair of three set victories in singles matches. Wilson won 7-6, 0-6, 6-4 at No. 1-singles and Marazzi captured a 6-1, 4-6, 10-8 win at No. 6-singles.
Bottorff was defeated in a tough three set match at No. 2 with a 1-6, 7-6, 2-6 score. Mella lost 1-6, 1-6 at No. 3, Siepman fell 0-6, 5-7 at No. 4, and Vessels was beat 3-6, 2-6 at No. 5.
