MARION, Ind. -- No. 23 Indiana Wesleyan University men’s tennis was defeated 6-3 this afternoon by No. 24 Olivet Nazarene (Ill.) at the Sutter Tennis Center.
The loss is the second in as many days for Indiana Wesleyan as they are now 12-4 on the season. IWU falls to 1-2 during the early portion of their spring schedule.
Olivet Nazarene gained the early advantage with wins in two of the three doubles contests. The only Indiana Wesleyan double win came at No. 3 when Joel Montgomery (FR/Powell, Ohio) and Adam Wroughton (SR/Schereville, Ind.) won 8-2. Kyle Johnson (SR/East Moline, Ill.) and Brandon Dubuque (JR/Marion, Ind.) lost 8-6 at No. 1-doubles while Gavin White (SO/Lakeland, Fla.) and Leonard Mathews (JR/Merrillville, Ind.) fell 9-7 at No. 3-doubles.
The Wildcats claimed two wins in singles matches which came at No. 4 and No. 6-singles. Montgomery won 6-7, 6-3, 10-5 at the fourth position while Austin Christner (FR/Goshen, Ind.) earned a 6-3, 6-4 victory in the sixth spot. Johnson lost 6-3, 6-1 in the top position and White was defeated 6-2, 6-2 in the second spot. Mathews fell 7-5, 6-3 at No. 3 while Dubuque retired at No. 5 when he was trailing 5-2 in the first set.
Indiana Wesleyan competes again next weekend with three matches in Grand Rapids, Michigan. IWU battles #RV Cornerstone (Mich.) on Friday and then plays Davenport (Mich.) and No. 25 Aquinas (Mich.) on Saturday.
