Box Score MARION, Ind. -- No. 4-seed Huntington (Ind.) came into Luckey Arena Friday night and upset No. 1-seed Indiana Wesleyan University women’s basketball in a 77-56 final in the Crossroads League Tournament Semifinals.
The Foresters shot 50-percent overall and from 3-point range. They boasted three players with 17 or more points and dominated the glass with a 44-23 rebound advantage.
“They came in to win the basketball game and we came in not to lose it,” said IWU head coach Steve Brooks. “And when you play like that you’re going to lose and we deserved to get beat. We need to do a better job or its going to be a short trip to Iowa.”
Indiana Wesleyan (27-5) struggled offensively and finished at 35-percent (21 of 60) shooting from the field and 12.5-percent (2 of 16) from 3-point range.
“We were discombobulated on offense,” continued Brooks. “Its stuff we ran all year. We came out not to lose instead of trying to win. We didn’t play aggressively and they did play aggressively. We got beat. We got beat in just about every facet of the game.”
Amelia Recker scored 24 points for Huntington to lead all players while Courtney Baker contributed a double-double with 14 rebounds and 10 assists. Miranda Palmer scored 20 points while Kelsey Hubble added 17 points. Palmer and Hubble combined to hit 8-of-13 from 3-point range.
“We let their 3-point shooters shoot 3’s,” said Brooks. “We didn’t make it real hard on them at all. For the most part we let them do what they wanted to do.”
Erika Isham (SR/Tekonsha, Mich.) paced Indiana Wesleyan with 15 points on 6-of-7 shooting. Emma Stahl (SR/Elkhart, Ind.) was the only other Wildcat in double figures with 12 points.
Huntington (22-8) advances to the Crossroads League Tournament Championship on Monday and will play at No. 2-seed Marian (Ind.) in Indianapolis. Marian defeated Saint Francis (Ind.) in overtime in the other semifinal.
Indiana Wesleyan will now await the draw for the NAIA Division II National Championship. The bracket will be released by the national office on Wednesday with the tournament beginning March 11 in Sioux City, Iowa.
