Box Score MARION, Ind. -- It was quite an effort by the No. 1-seed Indiana Wesleyan University women’s basketball team as they dismantled No. 8-seed Bethel (Ind.) 101-53 in the Crossroads League Tournament Quarterfinals in Luckey Arena.
“That is what this is all about,” said IWU head coach Steve Brooks. “Survive and advance. And we get a chance to advance right now.”
The Wildcats set a new program record as they shot a blistering 71.9-percent from the field on 41-of-57 shots. The old record of 68.3-percent was set during the 2005-06 season. The Wildcats nearly set a new 3-point field goal percentage record as they finished at 70.6-percent on 12-of-17 shooting. The old record was 71.4-percent and was done in 2008-09.
The 101 points is the most since the Wildcats scored 101 points in a win over Wilberforce (Ohio) on December 10, 2011. The last time the Wildcats score more than 101 points was a 105 point outburst against Illinois Tech on November 1, 2003.
“I’m pleased with how we competed,” said Brooks. “I thought our kids did a nice job of not looking at the scoreboard and just playing the game. We got a lot of contributions from a lot of different places. We were able to rest people who needed rest and that should help us on Friday.”
Indiana Wesleyan finished the night with 14 of 15 players scoring. The only player not to score was recently named Crossroads League Player of the Year Katrina Blackmon (SR/Marion, Ind.). She only attempted two shots but led the team with five rebounds and six assists.
Brooks said, “We had two in double figures and scored 101 points.” Carlee Cottrell (JR/West Bloomfield, Mich.) scored a game-high 19 points while Teneil Krebs (SR/Bucyrus, Ohio) ended with 11 points. Chelsea Winner (SO/Maria Stein, Ohio), Erika Isham (SR/Tekonsha, Mich.), and Anna Imhoff (FR/Carmel, Ind.) all added nine points apiece.
With the game eight minutes old Indiana Wesleyan held a slim 11-7 advantage. Over the next six minutes of play Indiana Wesleyan scored 21 unanswered points to lead 32-7. An Emma Stahl (SR/Elkhart, Ind.) bucket at the buzzer sent IWU into halftime leading 48-18.
Brooks spoke about getting out to a fast start on Tuesday. “They played Grace tough on Saturday. They have played Marian tough, they’ve played teams tough. What I didn’t want them to do was come in here and be the ones throwing the first punch. I want us to be the ones throwing the first punch. I think our kids did a good job with that.”
Bethel would get no closer than 28 points during the second half. Indiana Wesleyan built a lead as high as 50 points before closing the game with a 101-53 victory.
All four of the top seeds were victorious on Tuesday to set up the semifinals on Friday. No. 4-seed Huntington (Ind.) defeated No. 5-seed Goshen (Ind.) 69-63 to set up and Indiana Wesleyan vs. Huntington semifinal. That game will tip at 7 p.m. on Friday in Luckey Arena. All Indiana Wesleyan students will receive free admission.
