Box Score MARION, Ind. -- Wednesday was a busy night inside Luckey Arena as No. 6-ranked Indiana Wesleyan University women’s basketball defeated visiting Goshen (Ind.) 79-66.
First and foremost, the win secured an outright Crossroads League regular season championship. Indiana Wesleyan is 16-1 in league play and holds a two game lead over Marian (Ind.) with just one game left on the schedule. The league title is the fifth in the last six years. Indiana Wesleyan earns an automatic bid to the NAIA National Championship in addition to the No. 1-seed in the upcoming Crossroads League Tournament.
“This is what our goal was at the beginning of the year and we are thankful to be able to do it here at home,” said IWU head coach Steve Brooks. “Now we need to start to refocus on our second goal and our third goal.”
Wednesday was Senior Night in Luckey Arena as Indiana Wesleyan honored the four-player senior class. The four seniors, Katrina Blackmon (SR/Marion, Ind.), Teneil Krebs (SR/Bucyrus, Ohio), Val Sohasky (SR/Sylvania, Ohio), and Emma Stahl (SR/Elkhart, Ind.), were recognized in a post-game ceremony.
“Our seniors have been our leaders all year,” said Brooks. “They have done a lot for this program since they have been here. It’s going to be sad to watch them walk away.”
Blackmon made the most of the Senior Night spotlight as she reached a pair of career milestones. In the first half she grabbed her second rebound of the game for her 500th career rebound. In the second half, Blackmon hit a layup as she reached the 1,000 career point milestone. The large contingent of Blackmon family in friends erupted behind the IWU bench when the basket went in.
“It’s just perfect that all this landed on Senior Night,” said Blackmon. “You work all these years to get to that game and all these accomplishments today are what you work for. I couldn’t be anymore thankful.”
The Wildcats trailed a grand total of 12 seconds tonight after the Maple Leafs (18-11, 9-8 CL) scored the first basket of the game. An early 9-0 run lifted the Wildcat lead to 17-6. A Teneil Krebs basket with 4 minutes remaining put the Wildcats up 11 points and the lead never shrunk below double digits the rest of the game.
Indiana Wesleyan (25-4, 16-1 CL) went into halftime with a 44-27 lead. The 17 point cushion was the largest of the first half. On two occasions in the second half Indiana Wesleyan led by 18 points.
Blackmon led Indiana Wesleyan with 17 points and 6 rebounds. She was 7-of-8 from the field and dished out 3 assists. Krebs scored 13 points and Carlee Cottrell (JR/West Bloomfield, Mich.) added 12 points. Sohasky, making her first start of the season, finished with a season-high 10 points on 5-of-7 shooting. Stahl contributed 10 assists as IWU had 22 as a team.
Indiana Wesleyan completes the regular season on Saturday at Marian with a top-10 showdown in Indianapolis, Indiana. IWU is ranked No. 6 while Marian is No. 7.
