MARION, Ind. -- Indiana Wesleyan University women’s tennis is returning to the Crossroads League Tournament championship match following a 5-0 victory on Thursday in the Indiana Wesleyan-Taylor Rivalry Game sponsored by Marion General Hospital.
The Crossroads League Tournament semifinal matchup saw Indiana Wesleyan lose just seven games in the five completed matches. The match was stopped once Indiana Wesleyan gained the fifth point to clinch the team victory.
The Wildcats lost just five games in the three doubles matches. Katie Wilson (SR/Middletown, Ind.) and Lucia Solis (FR/Tucuman, Argentina) earned an 8-3 victory at No. 1-doubles and Rachel Bottorff (JR/Newburgh, Ind.) and Alex Mella (FR/Libertyville, Ill.) claimed a quick 8-0 win at No. 2-doubles. Kelsey Vessel and Ellen Hornett (JR/Fishers, Ind.) finished with an 8-2 victory at No. 3-doubles.
Solis and Marissa Klein (FR/Evansville, Ind) were the first two Wildcats to win singles matches to give Indiana Wesleyan the 5-0 victory. Solis won 6-0, 6-0 at No. 2-singles and Klein picked up the point at No. 5-singles with a 6-1, 6-1 win.
The other four singles matches were all in the second set with Wildcats leading each of them. Wilson held a 6-1, 1-1 lead in No. 1-singles and Bottorff led 6-0, 4-1 at No. 3-singles. Mikayla Marazzi (JR/Abbotsford, BC) was up 6-1, 4-0 at No. 4-singles and Vessels was in the lead 6-1, 2-0 at No. 6-singles.
Indiana Wesleyan advances to the Crossroads League Tournament championship match at 2 p.m. on Saturday. IWU hosts No. 2-seed Marian (Ind.) at the Sutter Tennis Center. Marian defeated No. 3-seed Huntington (Ind.) by a 5-0 score in the other semifinal match.
