Box Score UPLAND, Ind. -- Indiana Wesleyan University men’s soccer tallied a pair of goals in the final 10 minutes to break a scoreless draw en route to a 2-0 victory at Taylor (Ind.) in the Indiana Wesleyan-Taylor Rivalry Game presented by Marion General Hospital.
Indiana Wesleyan had pressured the Taylor defensive line all night long but was unable to breech it until the 81st minute. Seth Kintigh (SR/Concord, Mich.) scored the game-winning goal off a free kick situation as Samuel Conti (FR/Fredonia, NY) was credited with the assist. Less than three minutes later Evan Young (JR/Colorado Springs, Colo.) added an insurance tally for a 2-0 lead in the 84th minute.
“Really proud of the guys tonight,” stated Indiana Wesleyan head coach Luke Sanford. “We stayed the course and showed belief in our convictions about how we want to play. It was tough to break Taylor down and play through their block. We didn’t waiver though and in the end it paid off.”
The Wildcats outshot the Trojans 15-3 this evening and held a sizable 12-2 advantage in shots on goal. IWU keeper Josh Goepper (SR/Shelby Township, Mich.) - the reigning Crossroads League Defensive Player of the Week - made one save for the shutout. The Wildcats have three consecutive shutouts and have not allowed a goal in 339 minutes 6 seconds.
“We continued to defend well,” said Sanford. “That’s several shutouts for us in a row which has definitely been the catalyst to our run on wins here.”
Indiana Wesleyan has now won four straight matches to improve to 8-4-0 this season and 3-1-0 in Crossroads League games. Taylor drops to 2-8-2 overall and 0-3-1 in the league.
“I’m proud to coach at Indiana Wesleyan University,” said Sanford. “These boys are very proud to represent Indiana Wesleyan University. Tonight was for every Wildcat -- current, past, and future.”
Indiana Wesleyan returns home to Wildcat Field on Saturday night against Goshen (Ind.). The league match kicks off at 7 p.m.
